Tonic Rice Porridge with Astragalus, Codonopsis & Longan Fruits

This cereal nourishes blood, strengthens energy, and calms spirit. Because its focus in on tonification, it’s not recommended for someone with common cold or flu.

Ingredients:

‘Long Yan Rou’ Dragon Eye Fruit – tonifies blood

  • 2 c. brown rice or brown sweet rice
  • 10 grams (~2 sticks) Codonopsis Root (Dang Shen)
  • 10 grams (~2 sticks) Astragalus Root (Huang Qi)
  • ¼ c. Longan fruit (Long Yan Rou)

Directions:

Place Codonopsis and Astragalus in a non-metallic container with 5 cups water to soak for 20 minutes. Then bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid into a large bowl so that can use the liquid to cook the rice. (The herbs can be kept in the refrigerator and reused once to make a tea). Add the longan and the rice and cook over a low-medium flame for 1-2 hours.

This cereal tastes sweet because of ‘Long Yan Rou’ longan fruit. If you want it sweeter, add a little honey before serving.
