Advanced Herbology and Medicine Making

This unique series of workshops will help you cultivate your relationship to the 18 most cooking herbsimportant ‘lead’ medicines in the herbal pharmacopeia and their associated formulas.

These classes can be taken in any order, and are CEU-eligible. They are independent workshops, each made up of 3 parts:

Part 1 – Constitutional Body Types

Part 2 – ‘Duì Yào’ Herb Pairs

Part 3 – Medicine Making

18 different ‘lead herbs’ and their associated ‘types’ and formulas are covered. See down below for the specific herbs and schedule.  During each workshop, we will explore:

  • the specific body type & personality of the ‘lead’ herb & associated formulas
  • the ‘Duì Yào’ herb pairs that strengthen the actions of the ‘lead’ herb
  • medicine making techniques that relate to the ‘lead’ herb

Part 1 – Constitutional Body Types and their Lead Herb:

In Part 1, you will expand your herbal knowledge and deepen your understanding of the dynamic between the three crucial elements of transformational healing:

  • the person’s constitution
  • the disease pattern
  • the herbal formula

Inspired by Shang Han Lun classical theories, this Trinity System between the persondisease and formula serves as a short-cut for the correct use of herbs.

Learn to match an individual personality and body type with a ‘lead herb’ to address specific health needs. We will do an in-depth investigation of the constitutional body types according to the historical references of ancient texts (‘Shang Han Lun’ and the ‘Jing Gui Yao Lue’).  We will look at the diseases each type is prone to and touch upon representative classical herbal formulas, their ingredients and their benefits.

Part 2 – ‘Dui Yao’ Herb Pairs:

To increase your clinical effectiveness, learn how the lead herbs are activated by paired herbs, which synergistically boost the overall capabilities of the formulas.

Part 3 – Medicine Making:

You will create a medicine chest of your own healing remedies and learn how to craft a variety of extracts.

Each class we will make a high-quality product that incorporates the lead herb. You will be able to make, label and take home your preparation.  Here are some of the remedies we create, with organic and locally sourced ingredients:
