Kidney Tonic Cereal to Strengthen Low Back and Knees

This herb cereal is known to be good for kidney weakness characterized by low energy, lower back pain, weak knees, frequent urination, and low sex drive.

  • 10 grams (8-10 pieces) Radix Polygoni Multiflori (fleeceflower root, knotweed) = He Shou Wu

  • 10 grams (2 sticks) Radix Achranthis Bidentate = Niu Xi
  • 15 grams (5 pieces) Radix Dioscoreae (Chinese Yam) = Shan Yao
  • 5 grams (1 Tbsp.) Fructus Corni (dogwood fruit) = Shan Zhu Yu
  • 2 cups brown rice

Boil above herbs with 5 c. water in a non-metal pan or teapot over low flame for 50 minutes. Strain the liquid (saving the herbs for another use) and use the liquid to cook the rice.  Add rice, mix well, and cook for 2 hours over a medium to low flame.

OR: Steam the above ingredients with tempeh cubes or dried soybean curd or tofu cubes (or a mixture of these) and 3 c. water over a medium to low flame for 2 hours.

The herbs can be removed when served.

You may add seasoning or sweetening before serving.
